A Fly Landed On My Droid and the Screen Cracked

Droid Cracked Screen

I just spent the last week telling the world how much I loved my new Motorola Droid phone. What the hell was I thinking. I should have known better than to trust a device from Motorola. Those chumps haven’t made anything good since the beeper. All it took was a small fall from my sofa to the floor…a mere 2 feet…and now my screen is more cracked than Whitney Houston.

It all happened in slow motion. Slowly it started falling off the sofa, inch by inch. I reached for it and felt it sliding past the tips of my fingers. It hovered in the air between the sofa cushion and the floor for what seemed like an eternity. Then it hit. I thought it was ok…for a second. Then I saw the crack. Then another. Then another. The screen of my brand new Droid started splintering like thin sheet of ice.

Come on! 2 feet? Are you kidding me? I could understand if I dropped it on hard concrete. Even then I would expect it to stand up to a fall or two. But no…my droid lasted a mere 6 days and fell victim to a gentle breeze.

Now that I think about it, there were a few other things that I didn’t like about the Droid.

  • The querty keyboard is nothing more than a waste of space. Its impossible to type anything on the top row because my fingers hit the edge of the screen
  • The camera sucks. But apparently that is well documented
  • The battery cover always falls off
  • The volume always changes unintentionally

Even Verizon Wireless admins there are tons of problems with the Droid. They are planning an over the air update to the application software on December 11th. Well they better not give me a hard time when I return my piece of shit at the Verizon store tomorrow.

If you ask me, the software was the only good part of the Droid. The user experience was awesome. The apps are awesome. The maps are awesome. Hmm….in other words, everything Google was awesome. Do you hear that Motorola? Listen up and fix your piece of shit device. And you better replace my Droid assholes.

UPDATE: So Verizon Wireless was pretty good about replacing my phone. I called the internet orders hotline and they told me they would charge me full price ($579) for the phone, but if I took it into a store, they will probably exchange it. Sure enough my local Verizon store came through. I did have to pay a $50 “return fee”. But oh well. They also stuck me for a body glove and screen guards. So I guess they got what they needed outta me. I still think Motorola makes a shitty piece of hardware. But I am glad to have my Droid back.

  1. Another thing to watch out for is if they split your minutes from a normal billing cycle into 2 periods, it could have odd effects on overage minutes.
I had been charged $94 for 235 extra minutes, but the correct charge was $22 for 55 extra minutes. Verizon fixed this without a hassle…

  2. Same thing happened to mine 🙁 Hopefully I can get the Verizon store to do the same thing for me. Thanks for the info!

  3. ok wtf… mines fell from higher distances more than one and each time the screen turned out ok… that phone looks like chucked it on the ground as you can see by the scratchings on the side. it looks as if he applied a great amount of force to that screen. dont try to downplay the droids glass screen quality.

  4. I HAVE THE MOTOROLA CLIQ THROUGH T- MOBILE MY SCREEN IS CRACKED ALSO. I HAVE HAD THE PHONE 18 DAYS AND THIS HAPPENS. I DID NOT EVEN DROP MY PHONE . I HAD PLACED IT IN THE SIDE OF MY PURSE TO WALK OUTSIDE IN THE RAIN. I HAVE NO IDEAL WHAT HAPPENED. PERHAPS MY PURSE HIT MY CAR AS I WAS UNLOCKING DOOR. DEFINATELY DID NOT DROP OR PUT ANYTHING ON TOP. I DO EXPECT A PHONE(ANY)THAT COST SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS TO HOLD UP BETTER. HAVE CONTACTED T-MOBILE-THERE BEST RESPONSE WAS TO CARRY INTO STORE AND HAVE TECHNICIAN LOOK AT PHONE.HOPE THIS WORKS OUT. AND OH BY THE WAY IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT PURCHASING THIS PHONE—THINK IT OVER WELL— I AM A 41 YEAR OLD -HAD A PROTECTIVE COVERING AND TREATED THIS PHONE WITH KID GLOVES…

  5. have the motorola cliq as well… dropped it 5 feet ONCE a week after i got it and now its destroyed. thanks tmobile! 😀

  6. I have the cliq as well. My screen cracked today. Not surprised, this is the worst phone purchase I have ever made. Touch screen is way off and at times it takes 10 minutes to place a call because it opens every app BUT contacts. I hate this phone.

  7. Yep, Amanda. Right there with you. First my keyboard went out, so I started using the awful touch screen. Then my screen cracked after a TWO foot drop. REALLY? This phone sucks.

  8. Mine broke yesterday my front cover fell off and hooked onto the earpeace of my phone nd it pull the front glass screen and cracked….only thing holding it together iz my screen protecter…grrr hope I can replace it

  9. WOW. Are some of you people just making these things up because you stepped on your phone or got mad and chucked it across the room? I have had a few issues with my droid, but I have dropped it MULTIPLE times from off my lap as I got out of my lifted dodge ram, a good 5 foot drop or more and I have never had a screen issue. I have dropped it directly on the screen in gravel before and all I got was a small scratch on the screen…

  10. This phone pisses me off sometimes because the battery life is aweful but I’ve never had issues with the screen. I’ve dropped it many times and atleast 3 times with the screen face down on the concrete. Although the case is scratched up the screen does not even have a mark. One thing that sucks about the screen everything gets stuck to it. Tiny pieces of anything…dust, hair, etc. Its so annoying. I had to blow stuff off the screen couple times while writing this. Also Google andriod software kind of feels like beta software, so many bugs. How they except stupid people to use it.

  11. I definitely think you are exaggerating. I dropped my phone last night on the concrete, while sitting in a chair with it in my lap, so same distance right? I just have 2 hairline cracks horizontally at the bottom of my screen. Yeah I’m pissed but everything still works so I don’t really care. But anyway. Don’t lie, its not cool.

  12. this morning i dropped my phone and it landed flat on its back but somehow it was enough force to crack the bottom of the screen. This woudnt be weird if it were the first time it has fallen but its not. I have dropped it onto the edge of the curb and i really thought that would kill the screen but it didnt. I think there is just that sweet spot with every phone where the slightest breeze can destroy it

  13. My cliq cracked yesterday and I got it 5 days ago -_-. After reading everyone’s comments, I am going to try to go to T-mobile store and hope they exchange this bullshit phone. I’m so pissed.
